Diana Concert Benefits The Leprosy Mission

The Leprosy Mission, an international Christian organisation, will benefit from some of the proceeds of the Concert for Diana, organised by Princes William and Harry to celebrate their mother's life.

From 1990 until her death in 1997, Princess Diana was Patron of The Leprosy Mission. Recognising that the stigma associated with leprosy was ill-founded, she tried to dispel the myths surrounding the disease by visiting hospitals and touching patients.

Representatives of the charities with which Princess Diana was associated will be invited to a memorial service to be held in London on 31 August.

The Concert for Diana will take place at Wembley Stadium on 1 July 2007.

The event also commemorates what would have been the late Princess Diana's 46th birthday, and will feature some of the princes' and their mother's favourite artists, such as Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Joss Stone, Bryan Ferry and Pharrell Williams. More acts will be confirmed later.

"We (Prince Harry) both wanted to put our stamp on it. We want it to represent exactly what our mother would have wanted. So therefore the church service alone isn't enough. We wanted to have this big concert full of energy, full of the sort of fun and happiness, which I know she would have wanted," Prince William said.

In other news, The Leprosy Mission is calling on Christians up and down the country to get involved with next year's World Leprosy Day on 28 January 2007. The last Sunday in January has been set aside since 1954 to spread the message that leprosy still exists.
