'Code Vein' reveals similar gameplay to 'Dark Souls;' shows off combined 3D and 2D animation in new trailer

A new trailer has just been dropped for Bandai Namco's upcoming action role-playing game (ARPG), "Code Vein." The preview showed off the intense, action-oriented gameplay, as well as the combined 2D and 3D animated scenes.

Basing on the trailer, "Code Vein" will have gameplay that is similar to Namco's other ARPG franchise, the notoriously difficult "Dark Souls." The character backstory will not be too different either, as the player will take control of another form of undead.

In "Code Vein," the player character is a Revenant — a vampire who sold their own human soul for a taste of power and immortality. Most of the human civilization has been wiped out. Only a few of the Revenants survive and try to thrive in a hidden society named Vein, from which the game's title presumably comes from.

Human achievements and residences are long gone, becoming mere "graves of humanity's past."

As the players explore the game world, one of their main goals is to avoid becoming one of the "Lost." These are basically Revenants stripped of all human decency and morals.

Thus, the "Lost" are beings who have the speed and raw power of Revenants, minus the logical decision-making capabilities of a human. They are creatures that live for nothing but hunting prey, fueled by bloodlust. This makes them some of the most formidable opponents that players will encounter in the game.

"Code Vein" features a combination of 3D and 2D animation, with a story, told through cutscenes that are not unlike anime. Some of the animations are done by ufotable, a company known for their excellent work in making "Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks."

The song featured in the new trailer is called "Underworld." It was performed by VAMPS, a Japanese rock duo consisting of K.A.Z. and Hyde.

"Code Vein" runs on the Unreal Engine, and will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows PC. No specific release date has been announced by the developers yet, but it is expected to come out sometime next year.
