Churches get into sporting spirit

Churches have been making the most of the Olympic Games to engage with their local communities.

From festivals and sports fun days, to big screen viewings, sports quizzes and tea parties, churches have thrown their doors and front gates open to welcome in members of the community.

Christians in Frome, Somerset, got together over the weekend to host a sports festival.

Visitors to the completely free festival were encouraged to try a new sport, with coaching provided alongside the fun games and activities.

Churches in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, put on a two-day Fun Fiesta that included a 5km fun run to raise money for charity.

All Saints church in Isleworth, London, hosted an afternoon tea followed by a screening of the "blue ribbon" event of the Olympics - the Men's 100m Final, which saw Usain Bolt dash to another Olympic gold.

Sheldon Community Church in Birmingham hosted its very own Summer Games, including a charity football match.
