It's not easy baring one's past mistakes, but former FlyLeaf frontwoman Lacey Sturm did so in her memoir "The Mystery: Finding Love in a World of Broken Lovers."

In it, she revealed details of her divorce, affair with a married man, and battle with suicide. "It was a really hard book for me to release because it was vulnerable but also because it felt like, 'Why are you telling people these stories? Why are you telling these people all of your business?'" Sturm told The Christian Post.

But in the end, Sturm knew she did the right thing in writing that book because it would help others facing a similar journey as hers.

"There are so many people who have those questions, are in the middle of facing those choices, or on the other side of them and they feel worthless because of the mess they caused, like I did, and the despair of life," she said. "I just wanted to share how you can get through this time and make good choices that bring life to those destructive situations and heal from it."

Sturm had an affair with a married man named Nathan. Even though everybody from her church discouraged her from being the other woman, Sturm closed her eyes as she pursued the relationship. She even thought badly of her church peers for holding her back.

It was only when Nathan hit her that Sturm got a rude awakening and her entire perception changed. Back then, Sturm thought there was no way out of one's sin. But "we can actually choose to come out of it. It doesn't feel like you have any choices, but you can actually choose."

At the same time, Sturm had a difficult time submitting to authority, thinking it was "stupid" to do so. But since she learned how to submit to God, she experienced "such miraculous safety and miraculous peace." Doing so helped her overcome any bitter thoughts about her marriage and let go of suicidal thoughts.

"It's not that you're putting your faith in men that fail, its that you're putting your faith in God, and I'm going to cover you and take care of you even when you feel like you're humbling yourself to go along with something you don't feel is best," she explained. "In the end, God is the God of all authorities. He's the highest authority and He loves you and He can totally defend us and protect us."
