Chicago public schools will finally resume Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, after the district closed schools for two consecutive days.
Public schools in Chicago were closed Monday and Tuesday after dangerously cold temperatures struck the city. Around 400,000 students across 658 schools were forced to stay home as temperatures stooped to historically low temperatures, wind wind chills up to -30 degrees.
CPS said in a statement that schools will resume tomorrow. "Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students will resume classes on Wednesday after dangerously cold temperatures and severe winds forced closures on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to warm Wednesday close to January averages, making it safe for students and staff to return."
CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett stated: "At CPS, the safety and security of Chicago's children is among our top priorities. We are confident that we have made decisions this week in the best interest of student safety, and we look forward to returning to the classroom and delivering a 21st century education that will put students on a path for success in college, career and life."
CPS closed a total of four days in January 2014, which marked one of the coldest months in recorded history.
Schools had closed for public schools in New York City on Jan. 3, 2014 when the polar vortex settled in to the area. However, NYC public schools had remained open on Jan. 22, when low temperatures and snowfall of up to 12 inches hit the city.
