Ideally, Derrick Rose would score at will and take charge. Although the season is still in its infancy stages, there are a lot of things to consider before criticizing the former National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player (MVP).
At the top of it is, of course, the injury involving his eyes. Apparently, Rose is still suffering some eyesight issue, double vision, which persists but should improve over time.
The second thing to consider is that this Bulls' squad is running under a different system with a new coach. Seeing that the Bulls are 3–1 as of this writing, it seems that they aren't doing that bad.
Third is, of course, there is Jimmy Butler. Rose doesn't have to worry about point production with Butler proven to take the lead. There are some who believe that the two are not tight but the thing is, the two can function as a unit.
So in all, Rose may not be 100% his old self, but he has been doing his part, though not in scoring.
Remember that Hoiberg saw how important Rose was at the playmaking position, pushing up the ball and making the plays happen. And he is doing it despite not doing much of the scoring.
Of course, one has to wonder how the Bulls would be if he is his old self. Driving to the basket a lot and hitting outside shots on target. With Rose still experiencing some vision issues, his current role and contributions seem to be sufficient for now.
At some point, Rose will get back to his usual self. It could be good or be bad, depending on how an explosive Rose fits into the Hoiberg system. Rose reportedly feels good despite a slight handicap and the Bulls' record this early seems to be good with it.
And just maybe when the critical stages come around, Rose will be back to his fiery self. For now, he is doing fine and this is what matters.
