Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) is set to have a new job when "Castle" returns for its eighth season. She was faced with some tough choices at the end of season 7 after she passed her NYPD captain's exam and was courted to run for the New York state senate.

In the season 8 premiere, she makes up her mind and chooses to be the captain of the 12th Precinct. Executive producer Terence Winter spoke to Entertainment Weekly and said that though Beckett can certainly handle the new assignment, the job will come with some challenges.

"What's exciting is that now she's a supervisor, which brings a new dynamic with her," Winter said.

The executive producer added that because of her new position, she will engage in some "fun conflict" with Castle (Nathan Fillon).

But fans should not expect Beckett to be behind the desk at all times as Winter said that she's not going to be a traditional captain who stays in the office, as she will still be handling cases and will be involved in the interrogation.

Although Beckett chooses to be captain, her future as state senator is still in the cards. Winter revealed that there might be a future in politics for Beckett "somewhere down the line" because it's something that they have considered as a possibility, so that career path is still on the table for Rick's wife.

Beckett taking on a new role which comes with new responsibilities means dialing down the time that she spends working on cases alongside Castle on the streets of New York.

The writer won't be without a partner for long though, as Castle will be working more with Hayley Shipton played by "The Neighbors" alum Toks Olagundoye. According to executive producer Alexi Hawley, Shipton is an independent investigator with a penchant for doing things differently, and that's bound to put a fun element in her assignments with Castle.

"Castle" season 8 premieres on Monday, Sept. 21, at 10 p.m. on ABC.
