The Boston Celtics are expected to be aggressive this offseason with DeMarcus Cousins at the top of the list.
Now however, it looks like the Celtics will be setting their sights on another player – Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson. If they are successful, the Celtics will have a formidable mutt and jeff combo in Cousins and Lawson which brings to mind the days when the Utah Jazz flourished with John Stockton and Karl Malone.
For this to materialize, the Celtics would need to give up players in the process. And when we say players it means a lot.
Unofficially, the Celtics could place the Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynk, Isaiah Thomas and a couple of draft picks to make the trade happen. That is just once scenario from the Sun Times which could make sense though it remains to be seen which players and for whom they would end up being dealt with.
The Celtics look to improve on their surprise entry to the NBA playoffs this year, a breakthrough of sorts considering the player movement and misfortunes the team has had. The team is in a rebuilding process and their progress this season could indicate that all that may be coming to an end soon.
But how feasible is the trade scenario? Will the Kings really let Cousins go?
Vice president and former player Vlade Divac did say that Cousins is untradeable though such pronouncements have been rescinded in the past. Cousin's case is no different.
As for Lawson, it is no secret that the Nuggets are planning to dangle Lawson and Kenneth Faried in the market and there will surely be teams interested in getting them. With no coach to show for now, the Nuggets are likely to part with both players unless the new head coach has something to say about it.
Depending on how keen they are, Cousins and Lawson could end up together and form a formidable duo in Boston. It all now lies in the hands of Danny Ainge to make it work.
