Book ridicules Bush’s Theological Stance in US Administration

A retired theology professor, Joseph Martos has poured scorn on American President George Bush by declaring that he isn’t doing a very good job of following the precepts in the Bible. Martos is the writer of the book ‘May God Bless America: George W. Bush and Biblical Morality’. In the book he uses the Bible to bring doubt over the ethics of the current US administration.

The book goes on to evaluate the relationship between the current American administration policies on the environment, treatment of prisoners, war and social programs, with Biblical teachings. His conclusion was that the administration came up distressingly short.

However, Martos does believe that Bush is a very sincere man, but has simply been misguided by political conservatives, and supported by religious leaders that are obsessed with fiery topics such as abortion and homosexuality.

Martos believes that Bush says one thing in his speeches but that his administration seems to do something completely different. Martos though, has the belief that the President Bush is genuinely unaware of these contradictions. He used the example that even though Bush talks bout caring for the environment, his administration’s policies seem to outrage many environmentalist groups. Similarly he pointed out examples of his administration’s policies on freedom being opposed by civil liberty groups, and peace policies conflicting with peace activists.

Martos lays into Bush further as he talks about how the US has withdrawn from international environmental agreements, ignored the United Nations, taken part in a bloody war, and closed its national boundaries to refugees seeking a safe haven from genocides and persecutions in their homelands.

Bush does however have his supporters, and the largest section of these seem to be the conservative Christian group, who are certain in their beliefs that the President is doing what is right for America. The publishers of this book promote that this book will surprise many in this group though, and will open their eyes in a different kind of “shock and awe” campaign.
