Aside from the new Leap smartphone, unveiled recently at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, BlackBerry hopes to recover the market share it lost by coming up with what CEO John Chen hopes to be "an iconic tablet."
BlackBerry has already stopped production of its Playbook tablet series, and instead concentrated on garnering a mobile customer base by focusing exclusively on smartphones. The odd-sized Passport and basic Classic are both aimed at gaining a foothold in the increasingly-competitive mobile industry.
However, ever since the company decided to stop the Playbook, there has been a clamor among die-hard BlackBerry users for the company to come up with an all-new tablet. In a poll from N4BB, where visitors are asked what devices they want BlackBerry to have plans for, a new tablet came in third.
Although not exactly confirming nor denying it, BlackBerry is warm to the idea.
In an interview at the 2015 MWC, as reported by cNet, Chen said, "I want it to be different. I want it to be iconic."
BlackBerry is looking at other companies to check what ideas they have or what designs are on their table, as Chen wants to make sure that ifever his company will have to make another tablet, it will give others a run for their money.
"Bringing a tablet out for a tablet's sake, it's not the right thing to do," he said, then retorted, "We could always call it a PlayBook 2."
Considering the different announcements made about new phones, diversifying, and new partnerships, both at the conference at the MWC 2015 and in an interview with Bloomberg, one thing Chen is sure of: he wants BlackBerry to regain its foothold on the mobile industry market, tablet or no tablet.
