BAFTA Games Awards news: 'Fallout 4' grabs top prize for gaming

 Bethesda

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Games Awards was held in Tobacco Dock in London on April 7, and Bethesda's "Fallout 4' bagged the top award of Best Game in 2016.

The contenders for the top award were "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture," "Life is Strange," "Rocket League," and "The Witcher3: Wild Hunt." BBC News reported that Bethesda's European boss, Sean Brennan, was not expecting any award that night and was really surprised when they were announced as the winner of Best Game for 2016. Brennan mentioned that the year was full of competition but it felt "fantastic" to have won during the event.

The Guardian added that the BAFTA Games Awards was a special night for independent game developers like The Chinese Room for "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture," which was nominated for five BAFTAs but failed to grab one.

"We were nominated for five Baftas with Dear Esther and we didn't win any," said Jess Curry, one of the founders of The Chinese Room. "We were genuinely expecting not to come away with anything tonight and were OK with that."

Other small-budget games that were also nominated were "Rocket League" by Psyonix and "Her Story" by Sam Burlow. These games came face-to-face with big game companies like CD Pojekt Red for "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," Bungie for "Destiny: The Taken King," and EA Sports for "FIFA 16."

Another big winner in the recently concluded gaming awards is Sam Barlow's "Her Story." It grabbed three awards category, namely Game Innovation, Mobile & Handheld and Debut Game. The mobile game is a murder mystery and is also similar to an interactive film. The short series of videos stars Viva Seifert as Hannah Smith. In another report from BBC, Seifert said that " actors are taking it [gaming] more seriously."

The complete list of winners and other nominees are available on BAFTA's Games Awards website.
