Android Marshmallow update: Sprint rolls out Android M to Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy S5 Sport

Flagship users who are subscribers to mobile carriers are usually the last ones to receive a new Android platform version since carrier-locked versions will need specific Android versions. Samsung Galaxy users with Sprint can scratch their Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S5 Sport off the waiting list as the mobile carrier rolls out the Android Marshmallow update.

Sprint announced that the roll-out will be staggered, however. Instead of a one-notification release for all the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and Galaxy S5 Sport under Sprint contracts, the Android Marshmallow update will roll out on schedule, which started April 21. Sprint scheduled the update to roll out to all the Galaxy Note Edge by May 2. The Galaxy S5 Sport, on the other hand, will wrap up the Android M update roll-out by May 11.

In addition, the update itself will be in phases. This means that a device may receive a number of notification updates before the actual download of Android Marshmallow is completed. When the update installs for the Galaxy Note Edge, the build version will be N915PVPU4DPD. Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport will change its build number to G860PVPU2CPD1. Both flagships will update to Android 6.0 from their previous Android Lollipop 5.1 platform.

Meanwhile, although the Android Marshmallow update will be downloaded automatically via an OTA notification, users can still manually check for themselves if the update is already available via the Software Update option in the Settings and About Device tabs.

Updating to Android Marshmallow will bring stock improvements to the Galaxy Note Edge and the Galaxy S5 Sport, as well as carrier-specific tweaks. The Android 6.0 platform will add a number of new features to the flagships.

The two flagships are the latest to receive Android Marshmallow update under a mobile carrier. Although Google rolled out the Android Marshmallow platform last year, it is only around this time that mobile carriers are releasing their own versions.
