2017 Kia Niro hybrid release date: Specs, features, pricing details

 Kia Media

Kia Motors unveiled its first dedicated hybrid, the 2017 Kia Niro, at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show last week.

The 2017 Niro looks familiar as it takes the form of the Niro concept shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013. The upcoming hybrid will join the car company's EcoDynamics lineup, which consists of fuel efficient models like the Optima Hybrid and Soul EV.

Design

Despite carrying a hybrid powertrain, the 2017 Kia Niro is a "stunning design that doesn't shout 'hybrid,'" as stated by Kia Motors America Vice President of Product Planning Orth Hedrick in a press release.

The little wagon also has a sporty appeal to it as it adopts a "wide and low" design for better aerodynamics. On the inside, the 2017 Niro gives a modern, high-tech look, all thanks to the glossy black and white accents of the hybrid.

Specs & Features

The Niro gets its fuel efficiency from the Kappa 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 103 horsepower. As stated in the release, Niro's emissions and efficiency were enhanced through the hybrid's exhaust heat recovery system, which warms up the engine much faster.

Together with a 43-horsepower machine called "transmission-mounted electric device" (TMED), the gasoline engine can deliver a strong 146 horsepower. The hybrid's power comes from the six-speed dual-clutch transmission, which not only plays an important role in boosting the car's fuel efficiency but also provides drivers a comfortable driving experience.

The 2017 Niro also has security features all too familiar to Kia lovers. They include Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist; Smart Cruise Control; alerts when driver departs from lane and an emergency brake feature.

Pricing & Availability

Pricing details have been scarce but according to Forbes, Hedrick said that the 2017 Niro will be priced somewhere along the lines of the Sportage.

As for the release date, the 2017 Kia Niro is expected to hit dealerships in early 2017.
