Fans of 'The Good Wife' were shocked last night when one of the show's key characters, attorney Will Gardner, was shot to death.

The shocker had fans tweeting all night about the issue, with the hashtag #willgardner trending at one point.

One fan tweeted: "WTF just happened?My heart just shattered into a million little pieces. #WillGardner I will always love you.RIP"

Another tweeted: "Funny how you can be this affected and deeply hurt by something happening to a fictional character in a fictional story!! #willgardner"

The Good Wife promo did promise that the episode will bring shockwaves, but fans were not expecting Gardner to be killed off.

The Good Wife season 5 episode 15 titled "Dramatics, Your Honor" saw the attorney being shot to death in a courtroom by his client, Jeffery Grant, who is accused of murdering a college student.

Grant goes on a shooting spree in the courtroom, shooting dead his attorney Jim Gardner, played by actor Josh Charles.

After the show, Charles, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Garner in the series, tweeted: "Sending out all my love to #TheGoodWife fans! Playing Will Gardner was an honor and a pleasure. Thanks for all of your support & kind words!
