'Supergirl' season 2 episode 6 spoilers: Alex gets to grips with who she really is

While "Supergirl" may fall into the science fiction genre, it also infuses real-life struggles and success stories in order to ground its narrative. Recently, news of a gender-centric plot point has popped up with Alex (Chyler Leigh) finally coming out.

The CW show has been introducing superhuman characters with the debut of Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and the increasing number of alien sightings, so this latest development involving Alex's sexuality balances things out. Albeit not involving superpowers or extraterrestrial creatures, the story in itself is engaging not because it is fascinating but because it is relevant.

However, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg defended their decision to tread this path and explained that they are not glamorizing the situation. He told Entertainment Weekly that everything came organically in terms of Alex's narrative. Just because Kara's (Melissa Benoist) sister is pondering on her sexual orientation does not mean that it will be smooth sailing moving forward. In fact, Kreisberg teases a big episode for Alex tonight in "Changing."

"It's all coming as a bit of a shock to her. If Maggie [Floriana Lima] hadn't come along, I don't think she would've recognized this about herself, and probably wouldn't have had the courage to come out the way she is," he pondered. "There's a big emotional breakthrough in episode 6, which we're really excited about. From my research and talking to my gay friends, it seems like, at least anecdotally, when people come out later in life, they tend to come out because they've met someone and they have strong feelings for someone. That's what happens with Alex, that she has these very strong feelings for this woman. Watching that relationship have its twists and turns makes up the Alex storyline for the foreseeable future."

Spoilers suggest that the installment will see Alex in the early stages of her realization and it will be curious to see whether she will be open to talking about it or not.

Elsewhere in the episode, Kara will be in a very dangerous situation when a parasite alien robs her of her power. Luckily, the Guardian (Mehcad Brooks) makes an entrance to help the Kryptonian. Mon-El (Chris Wood), on the other hand, thinks about trying out a different career path.

"Supergirl" season 2 airs every Monday, 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
