'Scandal' season 5 spoilers: Mellie hits rock bottom, Olivia and Fitz's love to get a chance?

 ABC

The kiss between Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) during the fourth season finale of "Scandal" set the hopes high for those who are rooting for the U.S. president and his communications head to finally have the happy ending that they deserve.

But is this even possible, especially since his wife Mellie (Bellamy Young) is still around?

Olitz shippers are now hoping to see Fitz and Mellie ending their marriage legally so Olivia will have the chance to become the next First Lady of the U.S. However, series creator Shonda Rhimes seems to have shot down that rumor.

When asked if she would consider making Olivia the legal wife of the president, the popular series showrunner stated during ABC's TGIT press tour panel that she did not want to comment on any future plot of the series. However, she reportedly admitted later on during the after-party that the idea could be "intriguing."

But while viewers were glad to see the development in Olivia and Fitz's relationship, the actress who portrays the role of Mellie said that she feels bad for her character.

"Poor Mellie, man...," Young told TVLine after Mellie hit rock bottom in season 4. "It should be the best time in the world — she got her senate seat! — but it's like the worst, because Fitz kicked her out. And he was so cold when he did it."

But according to the actress, Mellie will learn to pick up the pieces in the beginning of season 5.

"She's having to regroup, but she's sort of by herself completely, because everyone is alienated at this point. She's never going to give up without a fight — I mean, shes Mellie! — but a lot of options are no longer open to her," Young said.

However, the actress confessed that Mellie is still in love with the U.S. president, and she will still get hurt by the fact that her husband will have a happy time with Olivia after he kicked her out of the White House.

"Scandal" season 5 premieres on Thursday, Sept. 24, on ABC.
