'Prison Break' season 6 release news: Dominic Purcell claims new season is happening

Michael and Lincoln in "Prison Break" Fox

Another hit from the past may be getting a long-term revival. Dominic Purcell, who plays lead Lincoln Burrows on Fox's "Prison Break," confirmed on Thursday that its sixth season is moving forward.

Taking it to Instagram to make the big announcement, the actor posted an image of the "Prison Break" title with the caption "@prisonbreak#prisonbreak 6. In the works."

The hugely popular drama premiered in 2005 and ran for four seasons. It was revived this past spring, bringing back Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) for yet another escape attempt, although it was a shortened season. Unfortunately, it wrapped up with less phenomenal ratings, but story-wise, it ended on a pleasant enough note for all involved.

As recalled, Michael and Sara (Sarah Wayne Callies) headed for domestic bliss with their son Mike after the Poseidon threat was seemingly shut down. With Purcell's character having no reason to break anyone out of prison anymore, it is hard to see where the show can go moving forward.

Fox has yet to comment on Purcell's post, but as far as his co-star is concerned, Miller seems down to be looking forward to returning for the potential "Prison Break" season 6. In fact, he pitched his own idea for where the show could take Lincoln and Michael next.

Focusing on a new antagonist called Tag, the premise sees the duo forced to relive every single moment from the past five seasons of the show for the big bad's amusement. See his whole post below:

Although rejected, the fact that he pitched something suggests the interest to return for another season is clearly there. If Fox ends up renewing it again, Miller should have more free time to commit to the show especially since he is exiting the DC TV universe as Captain Cold soon.

Then again, Purcell's announcement is not official until Fox says so, so fans should not get their hopes up just yet.
