CBS may still be a couple of months away from releasing the premiere episode of "NCIS" season 13, but the show's fans are already eager to find out how the season 12 finale would affect the plot of the series.

By the end of season 12, Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) was shot by a teenage boy named Luke (Daniel Zolghadri) in the street market of Cairo, Egypt. Luke turned out to be a member of the terrorist group responsible for the Cairo hotel blast that caused Agent Ned Dorneget's (Matt Jones) death.

For a while, fans of the series were worried that the supervisor of the Major Case Response Team might not return, especially after Harmon earlier hinted that no one in the show is indispensible and irreplaceable. But after several months of speculations, Harmon officially signed a new contract to reprise his role as the supervisor of the special U.S. Marine Corps unit.

However, the incident in Cairo could cause a major change in the show's dynamics. According to an earlier The Hollywood Reporter interview featuring "NCIS" executive producer Gary Glasberg, the season 12 finale will shake the events that will happen in the future of Gibbs and the rest of his team.

"Regardless of the outcome, any time that Gibbs or one of our family members is in danger or injured, it significantly affects everyone," the executive producer shared. "We'll have to see the long-term effects and the psychological effects, but they'll undoubtedly, as they always are, be there for each other. Then we'll see where it takes [us] as we move forward to the coming episode."

Also, recent spoilers claim that Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) will have a bigger task to fill when "NCIS" returns on Sept. 22 for its 13th season.
