'Longmire' season 5 update: Netflix gives Sheriff Walt Longmire another run

A renewal petition and an agonizing month-long wait later, "Longmire" season 5 has been, at long last, made official by Netflix. The streaming giant, which picked up the series when A&E cancelled it after three seasons, announced the good news via the Facebook account of the show.

"We've never been one to back down from a fight. Longmire will return to Netflix for Season 5," the post, which came with a photo of everyone's favorite sheriff, read. There's no news about when new episodes will drop though.

"Longmire" season 5 should provide answers to the previous season's cliffhanger, which saw Henry being taken away by police officer Mathis and an intruder making an entrance in Walt's home at the wrong time. Screenrant believes things will end very badly for the former.

The previous season of the western action drama dropped last Sept. 10. The lack of renewal news worried fans of the show's fate. With reports saying that Netflix only picked up the show from its original home just to help it tie everything in a pretty bow, viewers were reasonably concerned.

But even before Sheriff Walt Longmire moved to the online streaming giant, series creator John Coveny revealed that Netflix bet so much on the show and had great plans to do with the series when they first acquired it.

"We want human beings to watch this show — if it has heart and soul to it, we need that piece in the Netflix family," Coveny said during the Television Critics Association press tour via Variety before the season 4 release date, quoting Netflix heads.

"We're mercifully with a wonderful company now that values viewers over demos and we're benefiting from that," executive producer Greer Shephard said about the show during the same event. As it turns out, "Longmire" season 5 has long been arranged.
