Boxing news: Canelo Alvarez a step away from being a 'legend'

Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez has always shown promise and he believes that a win over Miguel Cotto will place him closer to being a "legend."

As everyone knows by now, the blockbuster match between Alvarez and Cotto will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Nov. 21.

The match is tipped to be a real fight to watch, better than the disappointing "Fight of the Century" held last May involving Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

The match is finally materializing after bogged negotiations last time out. After previous talks between the two camps failed, Alvarez went on to face James Kirkland whom he defeated via knockout in the third round.

On the other end, Cotto settled to fight Daniel Geale. The Puerto Rican champ won the bout by total knockout in the fourth round. It was after that match that Cotto called out Alvarez and so the two camps met again and finally came to terms.

Now, the fight promises to be an action-packed event despite claims of both sides that they will be approaching the other with caution. Many believe that it will be a fierce exchange but with both fighters familiar with the tactic of the other, don't be surprised if there would be some instances when either boxer would hold back.

One fighter who made a forecast is Gennady Golovkin who may possibly face the winner of the fight. The Kazakh boxer believes that Alvarez can come out on top. Apparently, Golovkin is banking on the Mexican boxer's age and punching power over Cotto for the upcoming fight.

However, Cotto could very well make up for the age disparity with his experience and punching power.

Given that, Alvarez knows that he needs to defeat Cotto to come close to being a legend.

"To become a legend, you have to beat a fighter like Miguel Angel Cotto. I am honored to fight someone like him," the 25-year old Alvarez told El Nuevo Dia, as reported by Boxing Scene.
