The release date for "Under the Dome" season 2 has finally been announced!

The science fiction drama series based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King will be premiering on CBS at 10pm ET on June 30, 2014.

Although it's still months away, fans now have a premiere date to look forward to. After the success of the first season, the show was renewed for a second season with 13 episodes on July 29, 2013, and has since been in production.

Three new characters will be introduced in season 2. CBS also announced that there will be two character deaths.

A new season 2 teaser trailer has been released at the 2014 TCA press tour panel today. Executive producer Brian K. Vaughan says: "The second season is going to take us places the book never go to go, he's bringing his own twists and turns. Stephen King gave us ideas we've never imagined. What's outside [the dome] comes inside."

The first season of Under the Dome, developed by Brian K. Vaughan, premiered on June 24, 2013. A total of 17.76 million viewers, including DVR viewers, watched the season one premiere pilot episode. The premiere pilot episode was the highest rated CBS summer premiere since Big Brother in 2000. Under the Dome ranked as the most-watched scripted summers series in 21 years.

The premiere episode of Under the Dome season 2 has been written exclusively by Stephen King.

Under the Dome is based on the story of residents in a small town in Maine who get cut off from the rest of the world by a transparent dome. Residents trapped inside try to find ways to survive with limited resources and no internet or mobile connection. Military and government personnel outside the indestructible dome try to break it down while those in the inside try to "figure out what the dome is, where it came from, and when (and if) it will go away."

Although the show is only in its second season, creators and producers already admitted that there is a final ending for Under the Dome. Actor Dean Morris, who plays James "Big Jim" Rennie in the series, told TV Line in September: "There is a final ending for 'Under the Dome' that is different than the book. And when it was pitched to Stephen King, he said, 'Wow. I wish I'd thought of that.'"

Under the Dome is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Amblin Television. Executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Stephen King, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider, Jack Bender and Brian K. Vaughan.
