'Star Wars: Shattered Empire' news: comic book issue reveals 'The Force Awakens' connections

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Poe Dameron LucasFilm

Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) is portrayed as an X-Wing pilot for the Resistance in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and while he is a new character in "Star Wars" lore, the new "Star Wars: Shattered Empire" comic books indicate that his connections to the franchise go back to the Battle of Endor in "Return of the Jedi."

In preparation for the theatrical release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Disney and LucasFilm have launched the "Journey to the Force Awakens" which includes books, games, and comic books such as "Shattered Empire" to tell the stories that occured in the 30-year gap between "The Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens."

As pointed out in a report from /Film, the main characters in the comic book prequel are Lieutenant Shara Bey and her husband Sergeant Kes Dameron. Bey was one of the Rebel fighters protecting the Millenium Falcon during its fight against the Second Death Star while Kes was one of Han Solo's soldiers on the moon of Endor.

The comic books reveal that after the Death Star was destroyed, the two would continue working with the Rebellion to fight back the remnants of the Empire. It is also heavily implied that they are the parents of Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron.

/Film reports that Poe Dameron being their child would make sense given the time gap between the films and Oscar Isaac's true age. Isaac is 36, which would make it plausible for LucasFilm and Disney to state that his character was born around the same time the original trilogy occurred or immediately after the Battle of Endor.

Isaac himself brought up the idea that Poe Dameron might have been a young child during the original trilogy and had grown up on Yavin IV, which further explain his close ties to the Rebellion/ Resistance.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theaters this Dec. 18.
