Spanish police have arrested a British man accused of 14 counts of sexual abuse against underage girls, police said on Friday.

The National Police Web site added that "Peter C.", aged 42, was arrested in the southern resort of Marbella following the issue of a European arrest warrant by a court in Guildford, in Surrey, at the end of May.

Crucial to the arrest was an exchange of information between Spanish police and Britain's Serious and Organised Crime Agency.

If found guilty, the man could face from 10 to 14 years in jail for crimes allegedly committed between 1989 and 2006, the police added.

European arrest warrants provide for extradition without separate proceedings and are usually executed within 60 days.
