Almost a year has passed since seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher returned with his family from the Lausanne University Hospital to his Swiss lakeside home for his continuous rehabilitation, but news about his health progress remain scarce.
Schumacher, considered as one of the greatest Formula One drivers of all time, suffered a traumatic brain injury due to a skiing accident on Dec. 29, 2013 while he and his family were on a holiday trip in the French Alps. He was immediately placed in a medically-induced coma because of the injury, until he showed several signs of consciousness in April 2014.
The world-class race car driver finally regained consciousness in June 2014 and was transferred from the rehabilitation ward of the Grenoble Hospital to the Lausanne University Hospital where he stayed for further rehabilitation until Sept. 9 of the same year, before his wife Corinna and children Gina-Marie and Mick decided to bring him back to their mansion in Gland, Switzerland for a more intensive rehabilitation treatment. However, his family decided to keep mum about his progress.
Because of the media blackout regarding Schumacher's health, details about his recovery have yet to be unveiled. Until now, the only recent report about the two-time Laureus World Sportsman of the Year awardee pertains to the relaunch of his websites to pay tribute to the 20th anniversary of his first world championship.
While Schumacher's health progress remains undisclosed, fans and friends of the F1 driver continue to hope that he will recover, based on small signs of improvement.
Back in August, former race rival Mika Häkkinen talked about Schumacher in a blog post seen at the official McLaren website. The retired Finnish race car driver recalled how he managed to beat Schumacher in a nail-biting race to nab the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix championship title. He recognized the German racer's determination to win during the race.
Häkkinen shared that he has no idea about his former rival's current medical condition, but he was very happy when he saw the video interview of Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm posted by Sunday Express UK in May this year, stating that the racer is showing slow signs of improvements "considering the severity of the injury he had." This made the Finnish racer believe that Schumacher will continue his fight for life.
He ended his post wishing his old friend to "keep fighting."
