London's growing churches were given a boost this weekend with the ordination of 36 new clergy, 10 of whom were women.

A lawyer, City banker and former nurse were among the candidates to be ordained to the office of Deacon.

The new deacons, graduates from theological colleges and courses across the country, have come to London in search of a more spiritually fulfilling occupation.

They will be posted to churches across the Diocese of London where they will serve their local communities and undertake public worship, teaching and pastoral work.

The Bishop of London, Dr Richard Chartres, presided over the ordination service in St Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday.

He said: “The church is supposed to be the community of hope.

“This year’s new deacons inspire me again with hope for the future and confidence in the transforming power of the Gospel of Christ.”

The new deacons joining the Diocese of London make up more than 10 per cent of the 330 in total being ordained this summer across the Church of England.

Another 150 men and women are currently in training for the priesthood in the Diocese of London.
