A crowd of some 25,000 fans joined in a minute's silence with the Bishop, football players and match attendants in memory of the dead women.
The Rt Rev Richard Lewis said: "In silence we pray for the five women who died."
"These events bring to mind the events in Yorkshire some 25 years ago," he said, referring to the Yorkshire Ripper who murdered 13 women between 1975 and 1980.
He named the dead women and prayed for their families.
Ipswich manager Jim Magilton said football "paled into insignificance".
Announcements went out to the crowds over the public address system appealing for anyone with information about the murders to come forward.
Fans were handed leaflets about personal safety as they entered the ground - situated near to Ipswich's red-light district, Sky News reports.
Police are focussing investigations on five main suspects, according to latest reports.
CCTV images were released of murder victim Anneli Alderton on a train between Harwich and Colchester on December 3.
In the footage, Miss Alderton is wearing a black jacket with a fur-lined hood, a grey top and blue jeans.
Police believe it to be one of the last sightings of the 24-year-old who police confirm was three months pregnant at the time of her murder.
