The group arrested by Fiji’s military government arrested included the Church’s general secretary, the Rev Tuikilakila Waqairatu, and two former presidents.
They were arrested in connection to the Church’s annual Conference, due to take place in August.
Government officials have since released the Church leaders but banned the Conference out of fear that discussions will focus on political issues.
Christine Elliott, Secretary for External Relationships for the Methodist Church in Britain, said; “It is clear that (Fijian Prime Minister) Colonel Frank Bainimarama is making a strong statement about who is in power.
“The Methodist Church is the largest faith group in Fiji, holds a significant amount of power amongst the people and has considerable influence over voters.
“The leadership of the Church is determined to stand against the government and has lobbied the UN regarding religious freedom and human rights.
“It is important that we hold our brothers and sisters in Fiji, their government and all in the islands in our prayers during these challenging times.”
In failed talks last week, the Fijian government had asked the Church to remove politics from the Conference agenda and bar two of its leaders from attending.
Methodist leaders in Fiji have vowed to go ahead with the Conference in spite of the ban and the arrest of Fijian politician Ro Teimumu Kepa for offering to host the annual conference in her province.
Martin Baker of the Council for World Mission’s Pacific arm fears for the future of the Church and religious freedom in Fiji.
He said: “I think it’s really difficult and in fact we have information now to suggest that emails and communications from some of those church leaders both within the country and to other countries in the Pacific region are being controlled and interfered with by the regime in Fiji so I think they face some really significant challenges.”
