Xiaomi Redmi 4 release date, specs: launch of new handset may happen later this year

Previously, speculations suggested that Xiaomi would be launching two new devices. However, the China-based tech maker only unveiled the Redmi Note 4 recently. Now, it is said that Xiaomi is not yet finished with the mid-range lineup, as another Redmi iteration is on its way.

Rumors about the new Redmi 4 continue to circulate online as new leaks surfaced recently. According to Phone Arena, just after the debut of the Redmi Note 4, another new handset from Xiaomi was seen on benchmarking site Geekbench. Codenamed Xiaomi Mido, the mystery Xiaomi phone features a Snapdragon 625 chipset and 2GB of RAM. It is also listed having Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow as its platform.

Should the new handset be the next Redmi 4, the rumor of the next Redmi having two versions is also possible. Prior to the "Mido" sighting, previous supposed leaks placed the Redmi 4 as having 3GB of RAM. This means that the new benchmark listing is for the base model with 16 GB of onboard storage, while a top-tier Redmi 4 with 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage will also be coming out.

As for its design and other specs, observers agree that the new lineup addition may still bear resemblance to its predecessor. This means that the next Redmi iteration will launch with a 5-inch display with full HD resolution, a 13MP main camera and 5MP selfie shooter, and at least 4,100 mAh battery.

It is said that the Redmi 4 will come out soon, as the phone is expected to be an interim release between the recently-unveiled Redmi Note 4 and the next Xiaomi flagship, the Mi Note 2. Since the new Mi Note is said to appear by late September, it is also possible that Xiaomi will also launch the new Redmi 4 around the same time.
