'Vikings' season 4 plot: Lagertha to be in danger?

The third season finale of "Vikings" saw Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) faking his death in order to help his army invade Paris. And while Ragnar's death was faked in season 3, will there be a real death in the upcoming season of the History show?

In the season 4 preview shown in Comic-Con, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) is seen looking anxious, and fans speculated that Lagertha might be meeting her end when she is seen smiling in the clip while the departed priest Athelstan says in an ominous voiceover, "One generation passes away."

Meanwhile, a mysterious man cloaked in black meets with Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland), and she says, "I want to know how women will succeed to the kingdom of Kattegat." The man says, "A woman will one day rule in Kattegat." But Aslaug appears to doubt if she is the ruler that the man is talking about as she asks him, "Will it be me?"

As Aslaug schemes to rule the land, will she be eliminating all future rivals to the throne, including Lagertha?

Earlier this month, Winnick took to her Instagram account to post a photo of her in character, and the picture contained the words, "I'm going to Valhalla." Fans immediately thought that the actress was hinting at Lagertha's death in season 4, and while some of her followers who are familiar with the history of the real-life Lagertha pointed out that Lagertha does die, her fans hoped that she wouldn't die in the upcoming season.

This week, the actress took to the photo sharing site again to post a filming update, which shows her doing a voice recording for the show.

"Finished another episode for season 4. Can't wait for you to see it," she wrote.

While Lagertha's fate is still unknown at this point, creator Michael Hirst previously confirmed that there will be a time jump in the upcoming season and that Ragnar's other sons will take on more responsibilities in the kingdom.

"Vikings" returns to History in 2016.
