"Tokyo Ghoul" is returning to TV screens sometime in 2018 with its third season "Tokyo Ghoul: re." Not much has been revealed in terms of plot or what the third season will focus on, but speculations about the new main character, Haise Sasaki, have been floating around the internet. Theorists on YouTube and excited fans have also been hard at work trying to make guesses about the anime's third season and whether or not it will remain faithful to the manga.

The anime's first season remained somewhat faithful to the source material, but the second season came up with its own original plotline and had Ken Kaneki, the protagonist, join Aogiri (a terrorist group combatting the CCG) instead of going off on his own.

By the end of season 2, it is implied that Ken Kaneki has met his demise at the hands of Arima. The pause after season 2 only led to more fan theories. Itech Post brings up a few of these theories.

Fans speculate that Haise Sasaki is actually Ken Kaneki in disguise, pointing out the similarities in hair color and other things, while others speculate that while Haise Sasaki and Ken Kaneki are not the same person, the latter is alive and will eventually return to the show.

These theories have not been confirmed yet, but the "Tokyo Ghoul: re" trailer reveals that Ken Kaneki's voice actor will be returning to the show.

"Tokyo Ghoul" was originally a manga series written by Sui Ishida. The manga ran between 2011 to 2014 and after that, a sequel Tokyo Ghoul: re was serialized in the same magazine.

The anime adaption also came out sometime in 2014. Studio Pierrot picked up the manga and turned it into a twelve-episode series. A second season aired from January 2015 and ended in March of the same year. Fans of the series have been waiting for a third season ever since.
