'The Vampire Diaries' season 6 spoilers: Love triangle to form between Stefan, Elena and Caroline

The Vampire Diaries -- "Rescue Me" CW

The season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries" may show the brewing tension between Caroline and Elena because of their love triangle with Stefan.

The executive producer of the show opened up on what fans can expect on the next season of "The Vampire Diaries". There will be a tension building between Caroline and Elena because of their shared love to the older Salvatore vampire.

"Her feelings for Stefan are friend feelings. I personally feel like she's not quite sure what she's feeling. It's all types of confusing. Lots of grey area: Stefan is her friend. Elena loved Stefan. Elena's her best friend. Kind of a no-fly zone, which is why I think that if she has had any more-than-friend feelings she's pushed them away or convinced herself otherwise," Dries told the Time Warner subsidiary.

After Damon's disappearance or apparent death due to "Project Kaboom," Stefan will become confused and will be coming to terms. Caroline (Candice Accola) is expected to be at Stefan's side. However, TVD executive producer Julie Plec hinted that the presence of the blonde vampire will not be enough to fill the sadness and emptiness in Stefan's heart left by Damon.

Stefan and Caroline bonded in the fifth season of "The Vampire Diaries" and fans saw that the two vampires developed the friendship. The two will embark on a journey to heal the sadness brought about by Damon's disappearance.

Plec also teased that the sixth season will be "a character-defining journey for Stefan and it'll change him quite a lot. At what point does he decide to give up or keep searching for answers?"

Meanwhile, Elena's toxic relationship with Damon ended with Damon's death as she was seen crying inconsolably in the final episode of season 5. Damon's little brother Stefan was also dealing with his brother's shocking death and season 6 could be about Stefan's life after Damon.
