In the next episode of "The Last Man on Earth," Todd (Mel Rodriguez) and Phil Tandy (Will Forte) encounter a survivor who has been trapped in a prison ever since the killer virus started.

The synopsis and promotional photos for the upcoming installment, which is titled "Karl," were just released recently. Apparently, while driving around the countryside, Todd and Tandy stumble upon a new survivor named Karl (Fred Armisen) who got stuck in a high-security prison and was not able to get out of there.

It is hinted that Karl will have a story arc when the show continues in the coming year. This is because there appear to be flashback scenes of Karl before the virus broke out and spread. Something of special note is that he went on a date with a girl named Zoe (Leighton Meester).

They are both seated in a fancy restaurant where Karl is talking to Zoe, in what seems to be their first date. Moments later, she smiles and appears to be pleased during their meeting together. It remains to be seen what happened during their date and if she survived the virus outbreak. Moreover, if she lived, will they meet each other again during the apocalypse? In the meantime, it seems that Karl will be first acquainted with Todd and Tandy when they meet one another in the prison.

In the last episode, Todd's adopted son Jasper (Keith L. Williams) ran away from the shared mansion to explore the countryside. When Todd found out about it, he asked Tandy to go with him and look for the boy. They ended up driving along a prison where a mysterious head popped up from a window. That person was likely Karl.

"The Last Man on Earth" season 4 episode 9 will air on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
