'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' plot, cast rumors: Daisy Ridley leaving franchise after 'Episode 9?'

Daisy Ridley's Rey has not even realized yet her full abilities as a Force prodigy, but her story in the "Star Wars" saga is quickly approaching an end. The actress recently revealed she does not want to play the character anymore beyond "Star Wars: Episode 9."

When asked by Rolling Stone if she would continue lightsaber wielding as the Force-sensitive human scavenger from Jakku after the final film of the current trilogy, Ridley gave a firm, "No."

"I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films," she explained. "So in my head, it's three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out."

While a character featured only in one "Star Wars" trilogy is not totally unheard of, Ridley's plans seem to go against everything Lucasfilm and Disney have recently confirmed about its future plans for the franchise.

Earlier this month, the studios announced that Rian Johnson is working on a new trilogy. It will be separate from the Skywalker saga, featuring new characters in a corner of the "Star Wars" galaxy that has not been explored before. Although they would be looking to cast new actors for new roles, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Disney president Bob Iger revealed Rey and the other core characters would stick around for future installments.

It looks like Ridley has already made up her mind, and she jokingly said she has to see how things turn out in life first.

"Who knows?" she said. "I honestly feel like the world may end in the next 30 years, so, if in 30 years we are not living underground in a series of interconnected cells... then sure. Maybe."

The idea of the actress leaving the franchise is saddening, but fans still have a lot of Rey to look forward to in the next few years. Ridley is reprising her role in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," which will open on Dec. 15, and the yet-to-be-titled "Episode 9" two years later, on Dec. 20, 2019.
