Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin's 'Adrift' set for June 1 release

"The Fault in Our Stars" and "Divergent" star Shailene Woodley and "Me Before You," "Love, Rosie" and "The Hunger Games" star Sam Claflin's new movie, "Adrift," is set to be released on June 1.

STXfilms, a division of STXEntertainment that will be producing and distributing the film, announced the summer release date.

"Adrift" is a survival, romantic drama derived from the true story of two avid sailors who embark on a journey across the ocean. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and her fiancé, Richard Sharp (Claflin) set off to Tahiti. Little do they know that they will be sailing directly into what is recorded as one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in history. In the aftermath of the hurricane, Tami found Richard severely injured and their boat in ruins. Stuck in the middle of the vast ocean, with virtually no hope for rescue, she must find the strength to save herself and her husband-to-be.

The upcoming film is directed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur with the screenplay written by Aaron Kandell, Jordan Kandell, and David Branson Smith, based on the book "Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea" by Tami Oldham Ashcraft with Susea McGearhart.

In the book, Tami and Richard were heading from Tahiti to San Diego, delivering a 44-foot yacht, Hazana, when the hurricane happened in 1983. She "navigated manually" using only a sextant and a watch, survived eating peanut butter and canned goods, and "sailed 1,500 miles in 41 days to reach safety in Hilo, Hawaii."
