Speculations say that Sony is working on a new PlayStation console. However, it will not be the much-awaited PS5, but rather an improved PS4. Dubbed the PS4K, the new console will reportedly launch this year to coincide with the PlayStation VR.
According to reports, the Sony PS4K is coming out soon. While Sony itself has yet to confirm it, numerous sources have already cited some inside information about the upcoming system. Originally appearing in The Wall Street Journal, it is said that the new PS4K system is Sony's answer to a number of new games coming out in the market, as each new title boasts of graphics-intensive gameplay. These graphics-heavy games will need hardware support that can perform and showcase the title's recommended settings.
This may possibly be the case why rumors say that the new PS4K console will appear before the PSVR launch, since the new hardware reportedly adds virtual reality support. While the current-gen PS4 can already handle VR content, the hardware components in the system will be overloaded due to the intensive processes involved. The PS4K will have components specifically intended for graphics-intensive gaming.
Another indication that the PS4K may come out sooner than expected is that it may be the launching console for the much-anticipated game "God of War 4." According to Yibada, inside sources have stated that they have already seen how "God of War 4" looks in its maximum settings, specifically settings intended for the PS4K. The insider reportedly wrote, "Info from a meeting we had yesterday. They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster."
According to The Verge, a mid-cycle upgrade is not that common in the gaming industry, but the emerging trend of VR gaming means that technology will have to cope. The industry follower said that Sony is not the only tech giant thinking along this line, as it is rumored that Microsoft is also coming out with an improved version of its Xbox One console.
