Hardcore fans have been anticipating the release of a direct sequel to the "Pokémon X and Y" games ever since rumors of "Pokémon Z" started circulating.
However, the expected fall 2016 release is unlikely to happen at this point. Reportedly, Nintendo has already shifted its focus to other upcoming games in the franchise, particularly the new "Pokémon Sun and Moon" as well as the first augmented reality game in the series, "Pokémon GO."
According to GamenGuide, Nintendo has already set its sights on "Pokémon Sun and Moon" as the next Pokémon trainer sim game in the series. Indeed, the game is almost here, as the title is confirmed for a November release. Developer Game Freak has also revealed that the upcoming game will feature a new batch of creatures, the seventh-generation Pokémon, complete with new starters and Legendary characters.
Meanwhile, testing for another anticipated game, "Pokémon GO," is already well underway. The field tests are coming along nicely, and recently Nintendo confirmed that the beta tests will expand soon and will be targeted at U.S. fans.
With the development of the two titles, it seems "Pokémon Z" is already on the backburner. Indeed, the shift is so abrupt that some observers have claimed that Nintendo has shelved "Pokémon Z." In addition, the direct sequel rumor started because of the titles of "Pokémon X and Y," so fans have come to expect a "Pokémon Z" version. However, a previous interview with Satoru Iwata revealed that the "X and Y" tags are actually axes in the Cartesian plane, as the "Pokémon X and Y" games served as meeting points for different people.
Should this be true, then a "Pokémon Z" title is highly unlikely. In this regard, "Pokémon Sun and Moon" may be the direct sequel that fans have been waiting for.
