PlayStation 5 release date rumor: At least 2 PS5 models to launch in 2019?

The PlayStation 4. Rumor has it that Sony is planning on releasing two models of its console follow-up. Playstation.com

While fans still enjoy the current games and updates on Sony's current-gen console, some can't help but wonder when the tech giant will release the much-anticipated PlayStation 5. Recent speculations suggest that while the follow-up may not be seen sometime soon, fans will get at least two PS5 models to choose from once the lineup releases.

According to Neuro Gadget, Sony may be thinking of releasing two versions of the new console, with each version catering to industry niches. The industry follower noted that with the expanding preferences of players in recent years, Sony may want to cater to all of them and tailor-fit the PS5 to suit gamer tastes. It is mentioned that the PlayStation 5 will come in two variants, one with a 4K Ultra BluRay disc feature, and the other one a sleeker, mobile platform with SSD storage.

The former is to address gamers who are fans of graphics-intensive titles, and may want to optimize ultra-high display settings for their games. On the other hand, the disc-less PS5 will reportedly cater to players who are fond of streaming their games digitally, and the SSD storage feature will make the downloads faster and the games play smoother.

ValueWalk said that should Sony go down this route, the company will be making their new business model similar to that of mobile devices. Tech manufacturers release different iterations in a single lineup to let their customers choose from a range of products. Being a tech industry giant (and already doing this with their Xperia device lineups), Sony may well expand its PS5 console lineup with two versions.

As for the release date, the industry follower surmised that fans may see the two PS5 iterations by 2019 at the earliest and, even with the two versions, will also see stiff competition with their fiercest console rival, Microsoft. According to rumors, Microsoft is also scheduled to release their Xbox One follow-up – supposedly the Xbox Two – in 2019.
