Now that "Outlander" has just concluded, fans and viewers will be glad to know that the romance-adventure will be returning for a fourth season this year.
The show, which was based on Diana Gabaldon's popular novels, was picked up for a third and fourth season by Starz. This was done so that production could continue filming after season 3 wrapped up its chapter. The fourth season's production schedule kept on going that when season 3 aired its finale, a teaser for the upcoming run was already shown.
The trailer shows Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and her husband Jamie (Sam Heughan) laying on the shore of the New World. Apparently, they got shipwrecked in America when they tried to sail back to Scotland. "There will be lots of different people here and all hoping to live for what would be called the American dream," Claire says to him. It appears that their adventures will involve settling in the new land and meeting different kinds of people. It remains to be seen what pitfalls and obstacles they will encounter there.
Significant viewer numbers convinced Starz to renew the show for back-to-back seasons. Executive producer Ronald D. Moore expressed, "We saw evidence of people going back and discovering the show for the first time, and it's just great. It's that perfect sort of alignment of all the various gears that make a successful television show go, finally catching fire with each other and moving forward."
This season saw double-digit increases overall and an average audience of 5.7 million over multiple platforms. Aside from the compelling story-telling, the increased viewership can also be attributed to the move to Sunday night and a fall premiere.
"Outlander" season 4 is expected to return sometime in 2018. A future season 5 has not been announced yet. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
