A major reset is about to begin in "Once Upon a Time" season 7.

After the heroes of Storybrooke faced one of their biggest battles to date, most of them are not expected to return in the next installment of the fairytale series on ABC.

Prior to the season 6 finale, actors Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jared Gilmore, Emilie De Ravin, and Josh Dallas announced their plans to leave the show. This caused an alarm to the fans of the series, since it would be impossible to think how the story will progress without some of the show's lead characters.

But according to series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, there are still a lot of things to look forward to in the series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Horowitz and Kitsis reveal how they came up with the decision to refurbish the story.

Horowitz mentions that he does not want to use the term "reboot" in "Once Upon a Time" season 7. "We're more thinking about it as a hybrid of a lot of things. We're paying homage to the original premise, but there are certain characters who are returning and some who are not." Horowitz adds, "It's a combination of a lot of things, but what we're trying to do is go in a new direction but stay true to the spirit of what the show has always been."

But if some of the characters will no longer appear next season, fans will still see Regina/The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla, Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle), and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) return in season 7.

In a separate interview with Deadline, Horowitz hints the three characters will play a central role in the upcoming season. He also mentions they will introduce more core characters in the series, including the adult version of Henry (Andrew West) and the Little Girl (Allison Fernandez) next season.

ABC is expected to air the premiere episode of "Once Upon a Time" season 7 in 2017.
