Moto X 2016 release date, specs, rumors: overhauled version of device coming soon?

Previously, Lenovo has stated that it will not kill off the Moto X lineup. Speculations suggest this is true, as supposed images for the 2016 Moto X surfaced online.

Perennial tipster and noted leaker Evan Blass has come out with an image, and first impressions may take it to be the 2016 Moto X edition. However, other fans commented that, with the new flagship series, the upcoming mystery device may even be an expansion in the new Moto Z lineup. However, should it be another Moto Z, then there are deviations in the design. Instead of the front-facing fingerprint sensor that is a signature of the new flagship lineup, the mystery device only has stereo speakers on the front panel.

The leaker himself has only dubbed it as a mysterious Moto handset. Blass even stated in the comments section that with thin side bezels, the mystery device is at least an above-average Moto iteration.

The image has been cropped from the original portfolio of designer Stephen MacLeod. He heads the design firm OnWhite, with Motorola as one of his clients. Ostensibly, MacLeod and his team design wallpapers for the company's Moto phones. The purported image is from an unused wallpaper, and the mystery phone is a yet-unannounced iteration.

Motorola itself has yet to come out with details on the device, let alone saying confirming it to be the 2016 Moto X. However, some fans still believe that a 2016 edition of the iconic lineup will come out.

The Moto X series has been Motorola's flagship lineup until Lenovo acquired the company. The release roadmap was then overhauled, with the new Moto lineup coming out with the Moto Z series as its flagship. However, Lenovo previously hinted that it plans to resurrect the lineup with a new 2016 Moto X edition. The company stated, "Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs."
