Minecraft Xbox One and PS4 to launch before September: Next gen versions won't have infinite worlds

The studio behind the wildly popular Minecraft has confirmed the next gen versions for the PS4 and Xbox will not have infinite worlds.

4J Studios said on Twitter that although the world size would be smaller than the PC original it would still be bigger than that on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

"Working with Sony/Microsoft on world size - not 'infinite' due to save size limits, but a lot bigger than PS3/Xbox 360," the studio said.

The clarification came in a Twitter exchange with a fan in which the studio also mentioned later on that gamers would be able to use the PS4's touchpad for navigating the game's menu and UI.

There is still no exact release date for the next versions but Sony has said they would be going to retail for the PS3, PS4 and PS Vita before September.  But fans are keeping their eyes peeled for a release even well before that in Q2, so possibly from any time now.

Walmart has already created a sale page for the Minecraft Xbox One version. Although it states that it is "not available at this time", it does say in the product description that it will be available in December 2014. It also lists the price of the game as $59.96.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer was reported by IGN back in March as saying that the XBox One version was close to being completed and 4J felt "really good" about the progress being made with the game.

Spencer went on to say that although 4J control the release date, they were "getting really close".

It's expected that the Xbox One edition will come with larger maps, more multiplayer features and feature enhancements.

4J also said before that the saved world from the Playstation and Xbox 360 versions can be imported to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
