Manchester United transfer news, rumours: Could Edinson Cavani be arriving as Marouane Fellaini departs?

After last season's dismal performance, anticipation is building over who will make the final cut at Old Trafford.

And there is fresh speculation that Marouane Fellaini may not survive Louis van Gaal's ruthless shake-up.

The Belgian was only signed to Manchester United 11 months ago but The Mirror reports that he may soon be bowing out.

Fellaini was a big signing for the Red Devils last summer, with former manager David Moyes parting with a substantial £27.5m for him.

But the midfielder has underwhelmed since then and The Mirror reports van Gaal is "desperate" to pass him on, even if that means selling him for half of what the club paid for him.

There is reportedly interest in the player from Napoli and Lazio.

Where one door closes another opens, as the saying goes, and it looks like the door at Old Trafford may be opening to Edinson Cavani.

While Fellaini's days at United look numbered, it is rumoured that the Uruguayan international is set to join van Gaal's new line up.

That speculation was sparked after his image disappeared from a promotional poster for his current club Paris Saint Germaine's away kit and was replaced with one of Yohan Cabaye instead.
