The season 6 finale came with several twists. Not only did Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) die, it was also shown that President-elect Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) betrayed Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes). Will this trigger the latter's return to the intelligence community?
According to "Homeland" executive producer Alex Gansa, the answer is yes. In an interview with Variety, he said: "One thing I can tell you about next season is that we have to get Carrie back in the intelligence business. She's been out of it for two years. It's time for her to return. We have to construct some sort of narrative to allow that to happen."
Should she return to intelligence, this will be a large blow to Keane, who has an adversarial relationship with the CIA. In fact, season 7 has been described to be a "civil war" between the president-elect and the intelligence community. At the heart of it is Carrie, who is coming to terms with Dar Adal's (F. Murray Abraham) claim that Keane might not be as "American" as she says she is.
While Gansa has made his intentions regarding Danes' character clear, he admitted that the details of the seventh season are not finalized yet. In an interview with Deadline, he said that they are only at the beginning of the process of developing the seventh and eighth seasons, the last of the series.
"We don't really even know where we're going to be shooting the last two seasons. We don't know what story we're going to be telling, whether we're going to be telling a Russian story or an Israeli story or an American story. We're in that real fun, gestating period," he said.
Much like the previous episodes, however, he said that he and the team will continue to keep an ear out for news to try to keep the story as close to current events as possible to make the show relevant to viewers.
