'Fortnite' news: Devs blame CPU meltdown for game downtime

The recent central processing unit (CPU) security blunder is now showing signs of fallout, and "Fornite" is one of the first casualties of said meltdown, as the developers of the game attribute their server issues to the incident.

Epic Games, the developer of "Fortnite" has blamed the patches for the said CPU meltdown for the multiplayer game's login problems and downtime. This was because the processor utilization was increased since the fix for the CPU meltdown had the adverse effect of slowing down processors, which a lot of their servers use.

The problems, however, do not end in downtimes, as Epic Games has also claimed that there may be other issues further along the line which may take place this week. Whatever these may be remain to be seen, but players should expect some of the worst problems in an online game. Rest assured, the developers are now hard at work in trying to minimize the damage caused by the security issue from processors and will try to come up with their own solutions.

"All of our cloud services are affected by updates required to mitigate the Meltdown vulnerability. We heavily rely on cloud services to run our back-end and we may experience further service issues due to ongoing updates," said an Epic Games spokesperson in a forum post.

CPU utilization saw as much as a 20 percent increase in server and cloud processing which is heavily used for online games and other online applications.

It is worth noting, however, that the developers had no choice but to trade processor or server performance for security, as the problems associated with the CPU meltdown are quite dire and would allow hackers to do a lot of damage to the company. With that in mind, online multiplayer gamers should then expect a lot of their other games to be affected as well and have similar issues to what "Fortnite" is experiencing right now.
