It looks like the Time Lord's hands will be tied with too much work next season, based on the epic trailer of BBC One's "Doctor Who" season 9.
The 90-second trailer first premiered during the show's 2015 San Diego Comic-Con panel held Thursday, July 9. It shows what the time-travelling alien and his female companion will be facing in the next 12 episodes of the long-running British sci-fi series.
Peter Capaldi returns to portray the titular role of Doctor Who, while Jenna Coleman reprises her role as the Time Lord's companion, Clara Oswald. Actress Michelle Gomez will also reprise her role as Missy, the female version of Doctor Who's long-standing rival The Master. The three actors were present during the panel presentation of the show in San Diego, together with series executive producer Steven Moffat.
The "Doctor Who" season 9 trailer shows a number of monsters that the time-travelers have to face. One of them is an Abraham Lincoln-look-alike who will appear in an undersea episode. There are also two-headed monsters, a horde of space Vikings, a cloaked man with a striped face, and a Vervoid-like creature. The duo will also journey to different locations, such as a Dalek city or in Skaro.
But those who were in attendance during the "Doctor Who" panel got more excited when they saw "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams toward the last moments of the trailer. Her still unannounced character, which will be featured in one of the upcoming episodes, does not seem to be a stranger to the Doctor since she is clearly comfortable when she calls him an "old man." There are rumors claiming that the actress, known for portraying the role of Arya Stark in the epic HBO series, will be playing Doctor Who's cloned daughter named Jenny, or she could be his granddaughter named Susan.
On the other hand, Moffat also touched on the long-running love-hate relationship between the Time Lord and The Master, particularly its evolution in the upcoming season.
"The way Missy comes back into the Doctor's life is not something you'd predict. It's very, very different," Moffat said.
Both the series producer and Gomez believe that the Doctor and the Master are actually friends to begin with, but they have a lot of differences that push them apart.
"It's kind of like the best friend that you love to hate," Gomez explained. "This great friendship that just went wrong. It's her life's purpose to chase the Doctor and make him realize that 'No, you started it. I'm right.'"
The premiere episode of "Doctor Who" season 9 titled "The Magician's Apprentice" will air on Sept. 19.
