Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin caused a lot of controversy since after their last September bout. While the end result did not impress a lot a fans, people have been clamoring for a rematch between the two. Even Golovkin himself expressed that he wanted a rematch. Finally, Alvarez agrees.
The second Alvarez-Golovkin fight will be on May 5. While Alvarez has agreed, Golovkin has yet to release their own official announcement. Unlike the first match back in September, there would not be any rematch clause attached to this second. That said, fans would need a winner by May 5.
"It's going to be another great fight, so it'll likely be a natural to do another rematch, but it's not in the agreement," says Eric Gomez, president of Golden Boy Promotions who promotes Alvarez, as per Los Angeles Times. "We want to concentrate on getting this done and then we can talk about a third fight later."
When asked who he thinks he is going to win, he undoubtedly chose Alvarez, although many would think that this is highly-biased. According to him, Alvarez has already figured Golovkin's moves, as seen in the last three rounds of the first fight. The second fight should then be more comfortable for him.
The decision on who to side for was the primary cause of controversy from the first fight. It ended in a tie with one judge, Adalaide Byrd favoring Alvarez, another judge, Dave Moretti, favoring Golovkin, and the final judge, Don Trella, scoring 114 for both fighters.
For now, there are few details about the fight. The date has been set to Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo as Alvarez's promoters mentioned that this would be when the boxer would go back to the ring. As for where the fight will take place, this has yet to be decided.
