'Bridget Jones 3' sequel: Renee Zellweger 'glad' to be doing third film in the franchise

After "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" premiered in 2004, many thought that this was the end of the British heroine's cinematic adventure as there has been no word about a third film since then. But Renee Zellweger is glad that after 11 years, she'll be reprising the iconic role which she first played in 2001's "Bridget Jones Diary."

Speaking with E! Online at the LA County Walk to Defeat ALS, the Oscar winner revealed that she never thought that third film, titled "Bridget Jones's Baby" would happen, but was "really glad to be doing it."

"It's really a nice reunion with friends," said Zellweger. "And it's always wonderful to be back in London and I love this character so it's been a real treat to get to revisit it again."

Zellweger is reuniting with Colin Firth, who will reprise his role as Bridget's love interest, Mark Darcy. The film is based on Helen Fielding's third book in the series, "Mad About the Boy," and last week, the actors were spotted filming on the streets of London.

In pictures posted by the Daily Mail, Zellweger is seen dressed as her character, who is now pregnant. The actress wore a denim mini skirt, black tights, a grey turtleneck sweater, and a black coat for the scene, while Firth donned a dark suit and black shoes.

Fans thought that Firth wouldn't be returning to the film since in Fielding's book, his character has been killed off. But according to the website, the third film is not based on the book but on old columns written by the author.

The film will mark Zellweger's return to films, as her last movie was 2010's "My Own Love Song." Patrick Dempsey joins the cast for the third installment.

"Bridget Jones's Baby" premieres on Sept. 16, 2016.
