Android Marshmallow updates: Android M to land on OnePlus One soon

While Google is in the final stages of coming out with next-gen Android N, some tech manufacturers are still in the middle of rolling out the current Android M platform, with some flagship devices – particularly the older-gen ones – still waiting for their updates.

OnePlus One users may finally scratch their devices off the waiting list as it is rumored that Android 6.0 may be coming to the older-gen flagship soon.

According to a recent tweet from OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, "Marshmallow for the One is in the final testing stage. Can't give ETA as it depends on other parties, but should be very soon."

Pei did not elaborate on what these third parties are, but it may be that the Android M version for the OnePlus One is not the stock version officially released by Google last year. This is not uncommon to tech manufacturers, as they tend to layer official stock Android ROM with their own platforms. Just recently, the update version for OnePlus's homegrown OxygenOS already rolled out, and the new version, OxygenOS 3.0, is an Android M-layered build for the OnePlus Two.

In addition, since the OnePlus Two already has its final, Android M-laced platform rolling out, fans may have already expected the OnePlus One to follow suit, hence the announcement from Pei.

Android Authority says that this is welcome news to OnePlus One owners since they have been waiting for some time now. Reportedly, OnePlus promised Android M for OnePlus One owners as early as November last year. However, due to the company not having a beta program for Android platform updates, the development and release of the new Android environment took some time. Additionally, OnePlus may have prioritized its current-gen OnePlus Two (hence the update for the flagship releasing first) over its previous model.

While Pei did not give a time frame for when fans can expect the OnePlus One update, it may roll out before the second half of the year, as rumors place that this time period will have OnePlus concentrating on the OnePlus Three.
