While developers are already testing out the preview for Android N in line with its approaching full release, some devices have yet to receive their Android Marshmallow update. Fans of the Samsung Galaxy S5 can cross the device off the waiting list as reports suggest that the flagship is starting to receive its OTA update to Android 6.0.1.

According to Sam Mobile, Samsung has already started the ball rolling for the Android 6.0.1 update in South Korea. What is interesting to note is that while the rollout is starting for carriers like LG Uplus, the update is targeted for both locked and unlocked variants of the flagship. This means that a factory image of the new Android M version is ready for an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S5, and it certainly is plausible that it can also roll out for global unlocked versions of the device.

As with previous OTA updates, users can also manually check if the Android 6.0.1 version is already available for their devices by checking the About Phone > System Updates tab. Users can also manually download and flash their Samsung Galaxy S5 to the new Android 6.0.1 firmware.

The rollout is welcome news to Samsung Galaxy device owners. Previous speculations suggested that some Samsung Galaxy flagships will start receiving their Android M update as part of a staggered rollout, and the Galaxy S5 is reported to have an April release period for an OTA update.

With the Android 6.0.1 update, the Samsung Galaxy S5 joins other company flagships – particularly the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge – that have already received their new Android platform upgrade. However, the South Korea-based tech giant has yet to roll out its Android M update to all its flagship devices, as some iterations have yet to receive their OTA update notifications.
