Although it is speculated that Google is already finalizing a new Android platform, many mobile devices have yet to receive the current Android M update. However, users of the OnePlus 2 can now take the device off the waiting list as OnePlus releases the latest OxygenOS based on Android Marshmallow.

According to the announcement on OnePlus forums, the community build – the final version – of the newest OxygenOS 3.0 is now live and ready to be downloaded. Unlike the stock Android M version, however, an OTA notification or a manual download via the Systems Update tab is not available, since the Android M version for the flagship is layered with OnePlus's homegrown OxygenOS.

For owners of the OnePlus 2, the update will have to be through dirty flashing, or upgrading the firmware without wiping the data or factory resetting first. However, the post also advised owners that although the OxygenOS 3.0 update can be made without wiping the data, it is much safer to back up the phone's data and apps first before trying the upgrade.

The new OxygenOS 3.0 is already available on the firmware downloads page of OnePlus.

Since it is not a Google version, the new Android M platform for OnePlus 2 comes with both Google- and manufacturer-specific tweaks. Aside from the stock improvements for Android Marshmallow 6.0.1, OnePlus added some improvements in the apps and software for the layered OS.

One of the features that OnePlus changed is a new camera UI for the OnePlus 2, making image capture options more streamlined and connected to the viewfinder instead of them being buried in the settings menu. In addition, the new OxygenOS 3.0 incorporates the updated app permissions from Android M.

Meanwhile, since the new platform comes in the wake of rumors saying that OnePlus is ready with its next flagship offering, fans may expect OxygenOS 3.0 to also be the platform of the rumored OnePlus 3.
